Here at the Novice Professor, we have a variety of resources we turn to regularly. As such, we are putting together a resources page, to share all the blogs, websites, and tools we use during the semester. Below, we have highlighted a few of the resources we plan to feature on our new page. Keep a look out for our resources page, which will be launched later this week!

  • Jessica Hartnett’s (@NotAwful) blog, Not Awful and Boring Ideas for Teaching Statistics, is the opposite of awful and boring. Through her blog, she provides tips, classroom resources, and amazing memes and gifs all centered around statistics in the social sciences. Dr. Hartnett is an associate professor at Gannon University. She is our go-to resource for all things related to Statistical Methods. Her blog helps make our lectures not awful.
  • Rajiv Jhangiani (@thatpsychprof) actively promotes open education on his blog, and offers numerous textbook materials through his website. At Kwantlen Polytechnic University he works as a Psychology Professor and is also a Special Advisor to the Provost on Open Education. His blog is a great resource, regardless of whether you are new to Open Education or a long-time supporter.
  • Founded by Drs. Megan Sumeraki (@DrSumeraki) and Yana Weinstein (@drwhy), The Learning Scientists (@AceThatTest) are a group of cognitive scientists who blog and create podcasts centered on making learning research for accessible to teachers, students, and parents.  One of our favorite things they offer is a variety of free, original downloadable materials about evidence-based teaching and learning strategies including posters, powerpoints, bookmarks, etc.
  • The Tattooed Professor blog is run by Dr. Kevin Gannon (@TheTattooedProf). Kevin is a History Professor and Director of his college's Center for Excellence in Teaching in Learning. He also contributes to the Chronicle for Higher Ed. Dr. Gannon writes on trends in higher ed, technology, and history. As non-historians, we find much of his writing to be widely applicable.
  • The Effortful Educator blog is run by Blake Harvard (@effortfuleduktr), an AP Psychology Teacher from Alabama. His blog focuses on applying cognitive psychology research to the classroom. Mr. (short for Master) Harvard's blog is a mix of commentary on current trends in education and the explanation and application of cognitive psychology to education.
  • There are two teaching-focused psychological societies that we recommend. The National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology is an annual conference for psychology educators (high school level through university). The conference includes workshops, invited speakers, and general sessions all designed to help teachers be effective and engaging instructors of psychology. We have talked a lot about what we get out of this conference on our blog, such as here, here, and here. The Society for the Teaching of Psychology promotes the scholarship of teaching and learning within psychology. Through their journal and annual conference, they promote the scholarship of teaching and learning in psychology. Through these outlets, we are able to stay current on trends in teaching in psychology, learn new ideas for course construction and class activities, and network with other like-minded teachers and faculty.

What resources do you use? Comment below or email us. Keep a look out for our new resources page, coming soon!
