Keeping on top of your busy schedule can be stressful at times! This blog has definitely touched on this topic before. Our tech guru, Jenel, has discussed strategies and tools she uses to keep organized and maximize her productivity. Her posts can be found here, here, and here, and they are definitely worth the read!
My system for keeping organized is pretty basic, but it works well for me. Like lots of folks nowadays, Google knows everything about my life, and I’ve accepted this for the most part. I use their calendar for absolutely everything, and it’s all color coded! Yay! Using the different colors allows me to quickly see how much time I’m dedicating to any particular project or class. This fluctuates from week to week, but it keeps me aware of the time allotment. I can easily make adjustments if I notice I’m neglecting or spending too much time on a particular task.
To keep track of the different responsibilities I have going on, I keep prioritized lists in a journal. It’s old school, but it’s very satisfying to cross things off after they’ve been completed.
At the beginning of the week, I’ll loosely schedule out my time with colored blocks on Google calendar, so I have a general idea of what projects I want to work on and when. When I get to a block of time dedicated to a project, I’ll look to my lists to know what to work on. However as metaphorical fires come up throughout the week, I adjust my schedule as necessary.
Every evening, I make a point to update my lists and schedule. This simple action only takes a few minutes, but it allows me to reflect on the day’s accomplishments (or shortcomings). Then the next day I’m able to start working right away.
These are the strategies I use to keep on top of my busy schedule. It helps me to be aware of how I’m spending my time and regularly updating my to-do lists! What are some things you do to keep organized?
